Nothing in football aesthetics hits like a great retro kit — baggy 90s geometry, 80s pinstripes, early-2000s minimalism. Whether you want to wear the classics or rebuild them from scratch, here's how to get your retro fix.
Ready-made retro kits in the app
My Jersey ships a Retro collection of fully rendered classics — including Manchester United's 1990 snowflake, Barcelona's 1999 centenary, Barcelona 2010, Real Madrid 2001, Liverpool 1983 and Chelsea 1997. Apply one, add a name and number in a period font, and export.
Rebuilding an era yourself
The fun part is recreating kits the app doesn't ship. Each era has a formula:
- 1980s: pinstripes, simple round collars, minimal trim. Two colours only.
- 1990s: chaos — bold geometric patterns, big collars, clashing panels. Layer a loud pattern (checkerboard, splash) over a bright base and don't apologise.
- 2000s: clean bodies, contrast sleeves or side panels, v-necks.
- 2010s: tonal patterns — same colour, two shades — with slim collars.
Pick the era, set period-appropriate colours, and use the pattern layers to match. The design ideas guide covers the colour theory.
The details that sell "retro"
- Collar first — a polo collar instantly reads as pre-2000.
- Number fonts matter — blocky serif numbers say 90s; slim modern fonts break the illusion. My Jersey has 30+ fonts to match the era.
- Keep sponsors period-correct — use the text sponsor tool with a chunky font for that 90s shirt-front look.
